Efforts to keep KCSM on television fell $100,000 short of the $1 million effort, but that didn’t stop the San Mateo County Community College District Board from approving the station for another year.

The new aquatic center brings the CSM aquatics program into the 21st century with one of the best facilities on the Peninsula. And no one is happier than Randy Wright, the Bulldogs’ swim coach and women’s water polo coach. Wright, who started the women’s water polo program in 2003 in addition to re-starting the swim team, had a hand in the design of the new facilities, which includes an Olympic-size pool as well as a warmup pool and tons of deck space.

CSM had right fielder Joey Wallace taking on the outfield wall and saw freshman right-hander Nick Franquez emerge for the first save of his collegiate career.

Two College of San Mateo journalism students have earned top honors in writing contests that included two and four-year college students throughout the state.

After a splendid Saturday in which the College of San Mateo softball team scored 20 runs and racked up 26 hits in a pair of victories, the Bulldogs fell flat on Sunday in the March Madness tournament hosted by Ohlone College at Fremont’s Central Park Sports Complex.

It’s still early and it would take a lot of factors to make this happen, but the CSM and Cañada College baseball teams both have legitimate shots to advance to the State Final Four in late May.

A former Serra standout, Maffei, in his first month of college ball, is hitting a robust .579 after a 4 for 5 performance in Wednesday’s Coast Conference Golden Gate Division opener. That average is tops in the state.
