The No. 11 seed Bulldogs (27-11) play at No. 6 Cosumnes River (25-14) of Sacramento this weekend in the opening round of the California Community College playoffs, a rematch from last season when CSM lost the best-of-three series two games to none. According to Bulldogs coach Nicole Borg, her team didn’t just lose — they were humiliated.

Sophomore pitcher Lauren Cole was nearly unhittable, while the Bulldog offense continued to swing hot bats. After wins of 13-1 over Foothill, 13-0 against Mission and a 5-0 whitewashing of De Anza, the Bulldogs continued to pound the ball against the Gladiators, scoring six runs on 13 hits.

Doug Williams won his 500th game as baseball coach at College of San Mateo baseball coach Thursday. The Bulldogs defeated host Mission College, 5-4, in Santa Clara in a Golden Gate Division (Coast Conference) contest to stay in contention for a ninth consecutive league title.

Outfielder Daniel Nava has inarguably been the best offensive player in the Red Sox minor league system over the past two seasons. In 147 games since signing a minor league deal with Boston prior to the 2008 season, Nava has hit .345 with a .961 OPS, 49 doubles, 15 home runs, and 95 RBIs.

Now in its eighth year, the CSM women’s swimming program has had some decent teams but never a true individual standout talent. Until now. “It’s nice. I’ve finally got myself a superstar,” Bulldogs coach Randy Wright said, referring to freshman sensation Andrea Chan, a Mills High graduate.

The former College of San Mateo outfielder was recently drafted — as a pitcher — by the Normal Cornbelters, a team out of Illinois that plays in the independent Frontier League.
