It’s been a season of love thus far for San Francisco Giants broadcaster Jon Miller, who will be inducted into the broadcasters’ wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame later this week.

Last weekend at AT&T Park, he was feted for his accomplishment, but there have been a number of local fans who have been disappointed at the larger media’s lack of complete coverage of his accomplishments. Especially those long associated with the College of San Mateo. While Miller himself has said several times he started his broadcasting career at CSM, many larger media outlets consistently glance over that fact. Even the ubiquitous Wikipedia minimalizes the time Miller spent at CSM, which he “briefly attended.”

Good thing the Sports Lounge is here.

“His whole broadcasting career started at CSM,” said Fred Baer. “The only reason he came to CSM from Hayward (High) was for the broadcasting program.” Baer has been involved with the school since 1961 — as a student, athlete, sports information director, as well as an early mentor for Miller, who was at the school from 1969 to 1971.

“His first over-air broadcast was at KCSM,” Baer said. “He was on the radio regularly.” Baer said he even had Miller working for him a few times compiling stats, but it became obvious early on that Miller had his mind set on what the future held for him.

“He had the natural ability (to broadcast) and he knew what he wanted to do at a young age,” Baer said. “The only place to go (for broadcasting training back then) was CSM.”

So once again, a community college school getting short shrift, which shouldn’t be the case for this school, given it’s pedigree. Not many schools — two-year or four-year schools — can boast the hall of fame stardom that has attended CSM. Not only is Miller now in a hall of fame, but he follows in the footsteps of NFL Hall of Famers John Madden and Bill Walsh, as well as Super Bowl winning coach Dick Vermeil.
