College of San Mateo’s defense played a defining role in helping the Bulldogs end a three-game losing streak and finish the regular season on a positive note with a 14-7 win Friday night at Laney.

Danny Godfrey, seldom used early in the season when CSM’s full complement of running back were healthy, stepped in and rushed for 98 yards on 19 carries. Quarterback Julian Bernard gained 68 yards on 12 carries and completed 10 of 18 passes for 136 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

CSM (7-3, 2-3 NorCal Conference) took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on Tim Celestine’s 24-yard run for a touchdown. Therman McGowan scored on a 21-yard pass from Bernard in the second quarter as the Bulldogs went up 14-0 at halftime.

CSM’s bid for a shutout was broken up when David Ross hit CorterAnderson on a 64-yard touchdown pass with 2:20 left in the game.

The pairings for next Saturday’s Bulldog Bowl will be announced Sunday.
