Assemblyman Jerry Hill will deliver the commencement address at College of San Mateo’s 89th graduation ceremony on Friday, May 27 at 6:30 pm in the college’s gymnasium. Assemblyman Hill has spent more than two decades in public service including 17 years in local government, first as a member of the San Mateo City Council followed by 10 years as a San Mateo County supervisor.

Currently serving his second term, the Assemblyman represents the 19th District, an area that encompasses the cities of Belmont, Brisbane, Burlingame, Daly City, Foster City, Half Moon Bay, Hillsborough, Millbrae, Pacifica, San Bruno, San Mateo, South San Francisco and parts of unincorporated San Mateo County. He chairs the Majority Caucus in the Assembly and is a member of Speaker John Perez’s leadership team, where he is responsible for negotiating key issues and guiding priorities. During the current legislative session, his focus is on reforms to strengthen the state economy, streamline redundant government regulations, improve the safety of California’s gas pipeline infrastructure after the San Bruno disaster, and cap excessive public pensions.

As chair of the Select Committee on Biotechnology and as a former member of the Committee on Improving State Government, Assemblyman Hill has tackled some of the most pressing issues facing San Mateo County and the State, including government efficiency and economic development. He also serves on Agriculture; Appropriations; Business & Professions; Government Organization; and Public Safety committees. He was recently named to the Select Committee on High Speed Rail and the Select Committee on Government Efficiency, Technology and Innovation. During his first term in the Assembly, 17 of his bills were signed into law by the Governor, and in the 2010 session, 95 percent of the bills he authored received bipartisan support.

The Assemblyman began his college education at College of San Mateo and he continues to be an ardent supporter of the college, making frequent visits to meet with political science classes and speak at college events. Assemblyman Hill earned a bachelor’s degree in history from U.C. Berkeley and a teaching credential from San Francisco State University.
