Assemblyman Jerry Hill

CSM alum and Assemblyman Jerry Hill will serve as speaker for the college’s 89th commencement ceremony on Friday, May 27.

Representing the 19th Assembly District, which includes San Mateo, Assemblyman Hill is currently serving his second term. He chairs the Majority Caucus in the Assembly and is a member of the Speaker’s leadership team, where he is responsible for negotiating key issues and guiding priorities.

As chair of the Select Committee on Biotechnology and as a former member of the Committee on Improving State Government, Assemblyman Hill has tackled some of the most pressing issues facing San Mateo County and the State, including government efficiency and economic development. He also serves on Agriculture; Appropriations; Business & Professions; Government Organization; and Public Safety committees.

He was recently named to the Select Committee on High Speed Rail and the Select Committee on Government Efficiency, Technology and Innovation. During the 2010 legislative session, 17 of the Assemblyman’s bills were signed into law by the Governor with 85 percent of them receiving bipartisan support. Prior to his election to the Assembly, he served 17 years in local government, first as a member of the San Mateo City Council and for 10 years as a San Mateo County supervisor.

Assemblyman Hill began his college education at College of San Mateo and he continues to be a strong supporter of the college, generously giving his time to make frequent visits to CSM, often as a guest speaker in political science classes, to discuss timely issues facing local and state government. In addition to attending CSM, he holds a bachelor’s degree in history from University of California, Berkeley, and a teaching credential from San Francisco State University.
