Martinez, who has mentored Tom Brady since the New England Patriots’ quarterback was a teenager, revealed two weeks ago that he had just a few weeks to live, losing battles with diabetes complications and a failing kidney. But on Saturday, Martinez was back on the football field, mentoring 35 teenagers at his 33rd annual quarterback camp in Woodside, Calif.

Martinez was a longtime successful coach at the College of San Mateo in football, women’s basketball and softball. Prior to that, he coached and taught at Jefferson High School. At both places, his teaching went beyond how to play a sport properly.

Sophomore softball utility player Alyssa Jepsen committed to Santa Clara University on Friday. The 2010 All-State shortstop and Coast-North Conference Player of the Year is soon to sign her letter of intent after debating between two Division I schools from the West Coast Conference – Loyola Marymount University and Santa Clara, which she’s set to attend in the fall.

U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier hosted her sixth local Job Hunters Boot Camp on the campus of College of San Mateo with about 700 attending. Her first was back in January 2010 and she intends to keep putting on the events until they are no longer needed.
