The “birthplace of the West Coast Offense” was evident on both sides of the ball during this week’s NFL Monday Night Football game.

College of San Mateo, where Bill Walsh made his debut as a college quarterback 60 years ago, has also been the proving ground for quarterbacks Tom Brady and Julian Edelman.

Former CSM quarterback Edelman, a Woodside High grad, was called to duty at cornerback and return specialist for the Patriots on Monday night. He had a 72-yard punt return for a TD for a 24-3 lead over the Chiefs and then made a tackle on defense on the ensuing kickoff.  He is now the Patriots’ all-time leader in career yards per punt return, 12.4. 

Serra high grad Brady was the signal caller in the 34-3 win, of course, as he passed Joe Montana for most regular season games won. Brady has been tutored by lifelong personal coach Tom Martinez, the retired former CSM head coach.

Martinez was brought to New England to work with Brady again at the beginning of this season.

–A CBS NFL Today crew visited CSM last Friday to tape a feature on Martinez — which is scheduled to on Thanksgiving Day during the 12:30 p.m. NFL Today pre-game show.

NOTICE: BOTHMAN BULLDOG BOWL TO AIR ON KCSM IN HI DEFINITION

Last Saturday’s Bothman Bulldog Bowl game between Diablo Valley College and College of San Mateo was, most likely, the first community college football game televised in high definition. 

It will air on KCSM-60 throughout the greater Bay Area on Saturday, Nov. 26, at 8:30 p.m. 

KCSM is “must carry” on all area systems. On Comcast it is usually channel 17 (standard def.) and channel 717 (hi-def.).
