The College of San Mateo softball team — yes, softball — kicks off the 2012 season at noon Saturday against Yuba College at Foothill. The Bulldogs will begin their quest to win the first outright Coast Conference championship for coach Nicole Borg, who enters her seventh at the Bulldogs’ helm.

Les Williams was the first African-American bomber pilot during World War II as one of the Tuskegee Airmen and broke racial barriers as a businessman in San Mateo County in the postwar years.

College of San Mateo could have used such a spark Wednesday night in Los Altos Hills as the visitors ran out of gas when Foothill, the top-ranked team in Northern California, turned up its defensive intensity in an 83-61 victory.

The College of San Mateo women’s basketball team pulled off perhaps the biggest women’s basketball upset of the 21st century Wednesday evening, opening Coast North Conference play with a 63-56 victory at formerly No. 1 ranked City College of San Francisco.
