The athletic programs at College of San Mateo decided to play a game of one-upmanship on campus last week.

College of San Mateo students Gabriel Denham, Niko Larot and Sterling He were each awarded prestigious scholarships of around $1000 by Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), the academic honor society and service organization of the California Community Colleges.

The win was the 20th in a row for CSM (16-1 Coast Conference, 36-3 overall), while starting pitcher Michele Pilster picked up her 26th win of the season, pitching three perfect innings with six strikeouts.

The College of San Mateo softball team clinched at least a share of the Coast Conference championship with a 7-0 win over Mission College Tuesday afternoon in Santa Clara.

By virtue of their wins last week against City College of San Francisco and Foothill College, the CSM softball team is one victory away from clinching their first outright Coast Conference title since current head coach Nicole Borg took over the program seven years ago.

College of San Mateo thrower Nikki Uikilifi took advantage of competing with an Olympic champion to produce the No. 3 women’s discus throw by a California Community College athlete this season at CSM’s Lucky 13 Invitational on Friday at College Heights Stadium.

A loss snapped a 12-game win streak for the Bulldogs (22-9, 14-3 Coast), who came in ranked No. 2 in Northern California and enjoyed a three-game cushion in the Golden Gate Division after a 5-1 win against Chabot on Saturday.

The College of San Mateo softball team won a huge game over the weekend, defeating nine-time defending Coast Conference champion Ohlone College 1-0. The win gives the Bulldogs a two-game lead in the Coast Conference North Division with five remaining on the regular season schedule. All this is good news. But, talking to CSM head coach Nicole Borg, you get the impression that no one in a Bulldogs uniform is counting their chickens just yet.

For the third straight time, CSM made short business of their opponent, this time handing Hartnell College a 9-0 loss in five innings of play. Meanwhile, CSM Baseball made it a lot less interesting against Monterey Peninsula, taking them down 14-2.

On April 14, singer and performer Pamela Rose will present her acclaimed show, “Wild Women of Song: Great Gal Composers of the Jazz Era,” in a benefit concert for KCSM-FM.
