For years, online classes existed on the margins of higher education. Then Silicon Valley startups devised slick platforms delivering elite university courses, free, to students everywhere.

Michelle Pilster took a perfect game into the sixth inning and settled for a two-hitter as the College of San Mateo softball team edged visiting Foothill, 1-0, in a Coast Conference North Division contest Thursday.

CSM swim star Miya Oto won the 100 free (54.11) and 200 free (1:56.13) in the 15-team Panther Invitational at Las Positas College in Livermore.

The Pilates Instructor Certificate Program has been so successful that the college has decided to offer new certificate programs this spring and fall to include a Yoga Certificate Program, Personal Training Course and Group Exercise Certificate Program.

Evan McDaniel posted a pair of early season state throwing bests as College of San Mateo opened its 2013 track and field season Friday hosting the Coast Conference Preview meet.

The college baseball season opened officially Friday and several local players will be among those who contribute to the six NCAA Division I programs in the Bay Area. College of San Mateo sent players to three of those schools.

One loss didn’t seem to bother the California Community College softball voters, who deemed College of San Mateo No. 1 in Northern California and No. 2 among the state’s 85 teams in this week’s official polls of the CCCFPCA.

The Bulldogs don’t have too much in terms of superstars, but head coach Randy Wright said the depth of the 2013 squad is its most promising and exciting attribute. “You don’t win championships with just your leading point scorers,” Wright said. “You win championships with everybody point-scoring.”

Of the Bulldogs’ seven victories so far this season, five have ended before the scheduled seven innings of play. Right now, it’s a level of play that means streamrolling past opponents. The Bulldogs have outscored the competition 55-6 in seven games and on Tuesday they showed exactly how they’ve gone about doing that right out of the chute.
