College of San Mateo swim star Miya Oto won the 100 free (54.11) and 200 free (1:56.13) in the 15-team Panther Invitational at Las Positas College in Livermore. The meet including powerhouse programs such as Santa Rosa and Diablo Valley.

Teammate Derek Koo was second in the 100 breast (1:02.39), fourth in the 200 breast (2:18.28) and third in the 200 IM (2:05.14). CSM’s Alvaro Andaluz (Sequoia-Redwood City) and Jason Wong finished in the top five in two events.

Sophomore Kellsey Mercado returned and placed in the top five in two events.

Last week in the Coast Conference Kickoff, Oto raced to success in the 500 free.

“Miya was able to post a great time last week in the 500,” CSM coach Randy Wright wrote. “Early in the season we decided to race the 200 and 100 today, we wanted the fastest field possible. Miya was up to the challenge. Miya was able to separate herself from the field and post great times.” Oto also started the 200 free relay in a time of 25.18, the fastest women’s 50 free time of the day.

Next up for Oto: She plans to try the mile.

“We might as well try them all,” Wright wrote. “She has been dominant in every distance of the freestyle so far.”
