A week after putting up just 105 yards of total offense in a 14-7 win, the College of San Mateo came into Saturday’s game against a tough Modesto team knowing there was no way they could put forth a similar effort and expect to win.

Neither offense could get much going. CSM had 65 yards on the ground and 40 through the air, while allowing 42 on the ground and 139 by air. The teams combined for 23 penalties. DVC converted only 3 of 19 3rd-down plays and was 0-for-3 on 4th-down tries.

After downing a pair of opponents in relatively effortless fashion (despite eight turnovers in the process) the Bulldogs move to Week 3 on the schedule on an upswing with a duel versus Diablo Valley College scheduled for a 7 pm start Friday in Concord.

The 28-7 score is decisive until you consider that CSM should have probably scored a lot more. Or, perhaps better suited, Chabot should have done more with four Bulldog turnovers.

DJ Peluso (El Camino High School) rushed for 159 yards and two touchdowns, and George Naufahu (San Mateo) ran for three scores as CSM opened the 2013 football season with a 41-27 victory over visiting Laney College.

For now, with a Week 1 game against Laney College around the corner, the focus at CSM — not just Pollack’s — is simple. “We’re going to play hard. We’re going to win the turnover margin. And we’re going to win the explosive-play margin,” Pollack said.

More than 15 hours of downward dogs, meditation, tree poses and a mishmash of other yoga-related activities will commence tomorrow at the College of San Mateo from 6:15 am – 9:30 pm.

Fall is the time of year when everyone asks, “How was your summer and what did you do?” Mine was great. Instead of sitting home wondering what to do, I accepted an offer to teach three summer art classes at College of San Mateo for young students, ages 10-15.
