The College of San Mateo baseball team had good reason to celebrate when it enjoyed a postgame dinner at Mary’s Pizza Shack in Santa Rosa. The 14th-seeded Bulldogs upset No. 3 Santa Rosa in the opener of a best-of-three series in the Northern California playoffs on Friday.

The hero was Keone Caninian, who went 8 1/3 shutout innings before giving way to Skyler Fuss for the final two outs.

“Keone was just outstanding today,” CSM coach Doug Williams said. “He was dominant with his fastball-slider and just filled up the strike zone. Can’t say enough about him.”

Freshman catcher Dylan Isquirdo had the key hit, connecting on a slider to drive in the first two runs of the game.

CSM (23-13) has won eight of its past nine games and carries all of the momentum into today’s 11 a.m. contest.

“We’re happy to be in the playoffs, and once you get in there you never know what happens,” Williams said. “And these guys are believing and feeling good.”
