Students at community colleges will soon be able to earn four-year degrees, as Gov. Jerry Brown just signed legislation to allow 15 college districts to take part in a pilot program for bachelor’s degrees.

What was so impressive about the Bulldogs’ Week 4 performance is the personnel upon which they relied. For the second consecutive week, CSM turned to backup quarterback Justin Burgess to spell an injured Jeremy Cannon.

Coming off a 51-6 pummeling at last year’s state champ Butte College, CSM (3-0) received 11 of the 16 first-place votes in the latest California Community College Football Coaches Association state poll.

As part of National Astronomy Day, the festival welcomes the community to learn more about astronomy, science and the wonders of the universe.

Last season, despite having the second best record in the state, College of San Mateo did not qualify for the playoffs. The reason? Butte College captured the NorCal Conference title

Realignment in community college football ended the rivalry between College of San Mateo and Butte College, but the schedule makers made sure that two of the top teams in Northern California clashed on the gridiron in 2014.

College of San Mateo football won its second straight game to start the year, triumphing 51-26 Saturday evening at Modesto Junior College.

“It will take time, but this loss gives awareness, team awareness, and the goal must be to improve as a unit,” CSM coach Randy Wright.

The College of San Mateo football team has been consistently in the running for conference and state championship races since 2001 and, although the Bulldogs haven’t captured that coveted state or national championship, they’re expected to be contending for the crown in 2014.

Bulldogs sophomore linebacker Randy Allen shined with a career-high four-and-a-half sacks, including getting in on back-to-back sacks to end the third quarter. As a team, the Bulldogs totaled nine sacks on the day.
