The Bulldogs took Palomar to the limit in the double-elimination tournament. After falling to the losers’ bracket with a 5-1 loss to Palomar Saturday, CSM eliminated Cypress with a 4-2 win Saturday night. Then the Bulldogs — needing to defeat Palomar twice — won Sunday’s championship opener 2-1 before falling in the nightcap 5-1.

The No.5-seed Bulldogs won Friday’s opener 8-2 — their 30th win of the year — before falling Saturday 8-5 and Sunday 7-2 at Delta College. Woodside alum Brad Degnan went 6 for 12 for CSM through the series.

Palomar College was the last team standing in the California Community College Athletic Association State Softball Championships, as the Comets won their fifth all-time state title. CSM took Palomar to the limit, advancing through the losers’ bracket to reach championship Sunday.

Lauren Berriatua reinvented herself over the past 12 months. The sophomore out of Notre Dame-Belmont was more than adequate in the circle last year, when College of San Mateo booked a return trip to softball’s state championships in Bakersfield College.

Up one game in the best-of-three series after Palsha’s relief win Friday, the freshman emerged Saturday in the eighth inning of Game 2 to relieve starter Devin Mahoney. Palsha retired all five batters he faced to save a 4-1 win for the Bulldogs.

The No. 2-seed College of San Mateo softball team overcame an early deficit to down No. 8 San Joaquin Delta 7-5 in Sunday’s Super Regional championship game at CSM. With the win, the Bulldogs improve their undefeated record to 40-0 and advance to the state championship tournament starting Friday at Bakersfield College.

While Lauren Berriatua didn’t throw a perfect game, she achieved a different type of perfection in Friday’s Super Regional softball opener at the College of San Mateo. Berriatua fired a one-hit shutout to lead the No. 2-seed Lady Bulldogs (38-0) to a 7-0 win over No. 10 West Valley (30-8).

The Lady Bulldogs’ sophomore was sitting atop the state leader board in batting average on Feb. 28 when she played her last game in over a month. Following a first-inning single against College of the Sequoias, Rodriguez advanced to third base on a bunt by Kayleen Smith.

Kawei Tan etched the last of his legacy with the CSM men’s swimming team over the weekend at the California Community College Swimming and Diving State Championship Meet at the East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium.
