The College of San Mateo defense, after allowing an early score, scratched and clawed to hold on for a 14-7 win Saturday at Butte College-Oroville’s Cowan Stadium. With the win, the Bulldogs improve their overall record to 2-2.

College of San Mateo was halfway home to its greatest defensive stand of the young season before a penalty and an equipment malfunction intervened. In the middle of that defensive stand was freshman defensive tackle Tukua Ahoia, one of the new faces on a revamped CSM defensive line.

After holding a 10-point lead for most of the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs (1-2 overall) were overtaken by visiting Fresno City College in the waning minutes as the Rams rallied for a 34-31 win Saturday at College Heights Stadium.

The bubble had to burst eventually for the College of San Mateo women’s volleyball team. After winning its first six matches of the season, CSM dropped two straight Saturday at the San Joaquin Delta Classic.

One week it is a quiet bus ride back from Modesto, the next week a joyous party in the postgame locker room for the College of San Mateo Bulldogs. The No. 18-ranked Bulldogs (1-1 overall) earned their postgame celebration with their first win of the season, a 69-20 romp over Sierra College Saturday at College Heights Stadium.

The College of San Mateo volleyball team didn’t quite know what to expect entering into its inaugural season with Wednesday’s opener at the Fourth Annual Skyline Volleyball Classic. With two wins in two matches, it’s safe to say expectations are now riding high.
