CSM (11-1 overall) — the No. 2 seed in Northern California — opened the California Community College Athletic Association football playoffs with a 52-3 win over College of the No. 3 Siskiyous (8-2) Saturday at College Heights Stadium.

Larry Owens doesn’t seem concerned that his coaching career might come to an end on Saturday at College Heights Stadium. “My focus is on helping these kids be successful,” said Owens, in his 21st season as head coach at College of San Mateo. “This whole thing has never been about me, it’s always been about the kids that I’ve coached from Woodside, to Pop Warner, to Humboldt (State) and NFL Europe. It’s about them, not about me.”

Back-to-back Bay 6 League champion College of San Mateo (9-1), ranked No. 3 in California and No. 4 in the nation, will host state No. 8 College of the Siskiyous (8-2) in a California Community College Athletic Association state quarterfinal game at 12 noon.

When the College of San Mateo Bulldogs closed out the community college football regular season last Friday with a 45-14 win at Diablo Valley College, they locked up their second straight undefeated season in Bay 6 Conference play.

With College of San Mateo head coach Larry Owens set to retire at the end of the season, Saturday marked the final regular-season home game of his career. There’s a good chance it won’t be his final game at College Heights Stadium though as the Bulldogs clinched the Bay 6 Conference championship Saturday with a 66-21 win over Santa Rosa Junior College.

Larry Owens will coach his last regular season home football game at College of San Mateo on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 1pm, against Santa Rosa JC. All former CSM football players are invited to return to College Heights Stadium for the special day, which will also feature a post-game private gathering at the College Center for gridiron alumni following the game.
