New College of San Mateo football head coach Tim Tulloch joked Monday his first task after being named to the job was firing himself as defensive coordinator.

One of his actual first orders of business, though, was no joke.

On Sunday night, quarterback Miles Kendrick signed a transfer to play Division I football at the University of Kansas on a full athletic scholarship, Tulloch said.

A 2017 graduate of Valley Christian-San Jose, Kendrick recently finished his true freshman season at CSM, helping the Bulldogs to a Northern California championship.

“When you see someone like Miles leaving, that’s what he came here for,” Tulloch said of the one-and-done transfer.

Kendrick gained 2,304 total yards in 2017, passing for a 57.9 completion percentage and 1,889 yards. He added 417 rushing yards on 107 carries.

CSM is set to return its other quarterback, Shawn Akina, who passed for 1,031 yards this season. It was Akina who quarterbacked the Bulldogs in the Northern California championship game, a 24-21 win at American River College.

“[Akina] was 4-0 (as a starter),” Tulloch said. “He didn’t lose a game. So, we have winners returning.”

Kendrick marks the third CSM quarterback to transfer to a Division I program in as many year. Last season, Ryan Brand tranferred to University of Maryland. After the 2015 season, Dru Brown transferred following his freshman season to University of Hawaii.
