The Bulldogs ran it and ran it, and then ran it some more.
The result was College of San Mateo (3-0 Bay 6, 6-2 overall) scoring 35 unanswered first-half point en route to a 49-7 dismantling of Diablo Valley College (0-3, 2-6) Saturday at College Heights Stadium.
CSM rallied for 397 total yards of offense, with 320 of those yards coming via the ground attack. Nine different players rushed the ball for the Bulldogs, with freshman Avery Runner (Kennedy-Sacramento) pacing the team with a career-high 76 yards on three carries and two touchdowns, including a 65-yard score in the third quarter.
Sophomore running back Rahsaan Fontenette (Oak Grove-San Jose) added nine carries for 65 yards, freshman Jalen Lampley (Franklin-Elk Grove) took five carries for 52 yards and a touchdown, and sophomore Cam Taylor (Hillsdale) went for 38 yards on 10 carries with a score.
The Bulldogs took over at their own 33 after a punt and marched seven plays for 67 yards on their opening drive. Sophomore quarterback Kamalii Akina (St. Francis-Mountain View) moved the ball past midfield with a 33-yard run. Taylor later scored on a 2-yard run.
CSM upped the lead to 14-0 late in the first quarter when Akina hit sophomore Rory Uniacke (Serra) for a 73-yard touchdown pass.
The Bulldogs never looked back, outgaining DVC 397-231 in total yards.
Akina tabbed CSM’s only two pass completions of the afternoon. Freshman quarterback Terrell Carter added five carries for 21 yards rushing, and sophomore quarterback Matt Adamkiewicz carried once for nine yards.
With the win, CSM maintains the only unbeaten record in Bay 6 Conference play. The Bulldogs travel to fourth-place Chabot this coming Saturday for a 6 p.m. kickoff. CSM then closes the regular season at home Saturday, Nov. 10 against second-place City College of San Francisco.
