After a one week “hiatus,” College of San Mateo is back atop California Community College football coaches poll, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. Reigning CCCAA state champ Riverside (3-1) had its pacesetting 15-game win streak interrupted by Golden West, 37-20, and dropped from the top spot to No. 7 this week. Six National Division teams, two with make-ups pending, remain undefeated.

ollege of San Mateo is off to a 3-0 start and got past its toughest opponent Saturday. The Bulldogs (3-0) took down Butte College 21-14 at Bulldog Stadium, grinding for 213 rushing yards on the day with its two-headed backfield monster of J’Wan Evans and Darrell Page.

In four minutes, College of San Mateo showed off all three facets of its game — and what a remarkable showing it was. The Bulldogs (2-0 overall) hadn’t played a game on their home field since Nov. 30, 2019 — a 41-0 victory over Modesto Junior College in the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California championship game — and celebrated their return to Bulldog Stadium in style Saturday afternoon, defeating College of the Sequoias (0-2) by the same score of 41-0.

With a roster featuring one sophomore and a dozen freshmen, the College of San Mateo women’s volleyball team is a work in progress. If the Bulldogs can get to where head coach Katie Goldhahn believes they go, it will be a successful season for CSM.

It began as a trickle; then, over time, it became a flood. That’s the basic story of enrollment at what was known as San Mateo Junior College. When the two-year school was founded in 1922, only 35 students were enrolled. Nearly 100 years later, the San Mateo County Community College District educates about 40,000 adults at the College of San Mateo, Cañada College in Redwood and Skyline College in Redwood City.

Luke Bottari and J’Wan Evans struck quite a balance in College of San Mateo’s 45-5 victory at Santa Rosa in Saturday’s season opener. Bottari, a sophomore quarterback, got the Bulldogs on the board with two first-half touchdown passes. Evans, a transfer from Virginia Tech, did the rest 183 yards rushing on 10 carries and two touchdowns to solidify the rout.
