This column was supposed to be about a rising political star. But it turns out that this rising political star isn’t interested in being a rising political star. Instead, he wants to do what he does best, helping students. He’s living his life story by helping students receive the kind of help he needed and never received because didn’t realize it was there for the asking.

The old coaching adage of “control what you can control” has been put to use more in the last 18 months since the emergence of COVID-19. The slogan became a way for athletes and coaches to stay sane during the last year and a half of tumult. But now that basketball teams are back on the court, the College of San Mateo and Skyline College women’s basketball teams have had ultimate control — over the opposition. The two programs have opened the season with a combined record of 19-1 — Skyline is at 11-1, while CSM checks in with a perfect 8-0 mark.

CSM student Daniela Haas’ relaxed demeanor hides an intense physical and mental toughness. The youngest of eight kids growing up in Peru, Daniela tackled any sport that happened to draw her interest as a kid, “anything and everything that didn’t involve a bat or a racket,” she says.

All hands are on deck to plan and implement College of San Mateo’s Centennial Celebration. Four committees have been working hard to plan and coordinate various components of the year-long series of events starting with the Centennial Gala on March 31, 2022, the day that CSM began operations 100 years ago.

College of San Mateo linebacker Demarii Blanks was voted Bay 6 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The 6-0, 230-pound sophomore out of Carlmont High School had 42 tackles and three sacks for the Bulldogs. He also forced a pair of fumbles, had two pass break-ups and an interception, as the Bulldogs completed a terrific 10-2 campaign.
