All five San Mateo County women’s and men’s community college basketball teams have earned postseason berths in the California Community College Athletic Association state regional tournaments — with first-round games set for Wednesday night.
Both local women’s teams grabbed home openers: Coast North women’s co-champion Skyline College (15-13) is the No. 14 Nor Cal seed and will host No. 19 Modesto JC (14-14) of the Big Eight Conference at 5 p.m. No. 15 College of San Mateo (18-9) will entertain No. 18 Solano (21-7), the Bay Valley co-champ at 6 p.m.
On the men’s side, the Coast North proved to be the toughest of the state’s 13 leagues, with all seven teams advancing to the postseason.
Third-place College of San Mateo (14-14) is seeded No. 19 and will open at No. 14 Santa Rosa (22-6) at 5:30 p.m. Fourth-place Skyline (18-10) is No. 12 and will entertain No. 21 College of the Siskiyous (14-13), the Golden Valley Conference champion at 7 p.m. Seventh-place Cañada College (11-17) grabbed the final seed (No. 24) and will visit Central Valley champion and No. 9 Columbia College (23-5) in Sonora at 7 p.m.
Coast North men’s champion City College of San Francisco (23-5), as the the No. 2 seed, earned a first-round bye and will host the winner in a Saturday regional semifinal between Cosumnes River and Gavilan.
The No. 1 seed is Coast South champ West Valley College (28-0), also ranked No. 1 in the state. The Vikings open Saturday hosting the first-round winner between Las Positas and Los Medanos.
