Special teams loomed large Saturday at College Heights Stadium. And the leg of College of San Mateo kicker Dieter Kelly loomed largest of all. Kelly delivered the Bulldogs to a 17-14 win over American River College in record style. With the game tied at 14 early in the fourth quarter, the 5-10, 225-pound freshman out of Orange Lutheran-Irvine tied CSM’s all-time record with a 51-yard field goal. In 2021, current San Diego State kicker Gabe Placencia also hit a 51-yarder for CSM.

Her presence at this historic event, held on September 6, 2024, was a moment of pride for CSM and the 100 NHPI leaders, advocates, and policymakers across the United States she represented.

College of San Mateo’s defensive line put its stamp on the 2024 home opener, leading the Bulldogs to their first shutout since 2022. The Bulldogs (2-0) recorded five sacks Saturday in a 23-0 victory over Reedley College at College Heights Stadium. The front four accounted for four of those sacks, with defensive tackles Ezra Funa and Pita Vi, and defensive ends John Gayer and Odera Okaka each getting to Reedley’s quarterback.

College of San Mateo sophomore Malaki Te’o has been cleared to start in this Saturday’s football home opener. A middle linebacker and the Bulldogs’ team captain on defense, Te’o was ejected from last Saturday’s season opener at Sierra College for a targeting penalty in the first quarter.

Gridiron openers in recent years between College of San Mateo and Sierra College have gained quite a reputation for their thrilling finishes. Saturday’s showdown at Ostrom Stadium may have been the best yet. The CSM Bulldogs (1-0) held off a late surge by home-team Sierra to start the 2024 community college football season with a 27-26 victory.

After state legislation allowed for the San Mateo County Community College District to provide free tuition for its students at a cost of $6.4 million, the Board of Trustees made making it permanent a priority for next year. Bringing the school year under a newly established chancellor’s tenure, the board outlined its goals and priorities for 2024-25, maintaining many of its already established efforts toward making higher education accessible for county residents.
