The San Mateo City Council and Mayor Rob Newsom honored College of San Mateo’s Football team during the regular meeting of the city council on Monday, February 3. The evening celebrated the team’s incredible 2024 football season, which culminated in state and national championships. Local leaders, community members, and college officials recognized the team’s athletic achievements and commitment to excellence in academics.
Under the guidance of head coach Tim Tulloch, the Bulldogs dominated the season, clinching the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) state championship with a decisive 43-11 victory over Mt. San Antonio College in December 2024. This win secured the Bulldogs’ second state title in three years and led to their recognition as co-national champions by JCgridiron.com. The evening’s presentation included introductory remarks from CSM President Dr. Manuel Alejandro Pérez followed by Coach Tulloch, who both praised the team’s hard work, resilience, and outstanding academic achievement off the field, as well as uplifted several current students who have committed acceptances to several 4-year universities across the nation.
CSM’s football program is about more than winning games—it’s a testament to the college’s holistic approach to student success. Several of the student-athletes earned impressive grade point averages (GPAs) of over 3.5, with a few earning 4.0 GPAS. Programs like “Writing in the End Zone” and “Math in the End Zone” provide specialized academic support for football players, ensuring they excel in the classroom. These learning communities, which integrate English and math courses with physical education, are tailored to help student-athletes build critical skills and thrive academically.
The team’s commitment to excellence extends beyond their time at CSM. Many players have already transferred to four-year universities, with several joining Division I programs to continue their athletic and academic journeys.
As the Bulldogs celebrate their historic season, they are also looking ahead. Training for the next chapter has already begun, with the team determined to build on this year’s success and continue their legacy of greatness. The city council’s local recognition marked a proud moment for the entire college community, honoring the Bulldogs’ achievements while setting the stage for even more significant accomplishments.
