The Promise Scholars Program (PSP) at College of San Mateo (CSM) is a transformative initiative designed to support first-time, full-time students in achieving their educational goals. Modeled after the City University of New York’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP), PSP offers comprehensive support services, including up to three years of tuition and fee waivers, textbook assistance, transportation and food incentives, and personalized academic counseling.
Since its inception at CSM in 2017, the program has expanded significantly, recently bolstered by a $2 million grant from San Mateo County in 2021. This funding extended PSP’s reach to an additional 500 students, emphasizing the county’s commitment to educational equity and workforce development, serving close to 1,000 students each year since 2022.
A hallmark of PSP is its low counselor-to-student ratio, approximately 1:150, ensuring individualized attention and support. Students participate in regular workshops and counseling sessions, fostering a community of accountability and encouragement.
As the academic year concludes, CSM celebrates a significant milestone: the graduation of its 1,000th Promise Scholar in the program’s current graduating class of over 200 students. This achievement underscores the program’s effectiveness in enhancing student retention and completion rates.
“The Promise Scholars Program embodies our commitment to student success, providing the resources and support necessary for our students to thrive academically and personally,” says Allie Fasth, CSM’s Director of Pathways & Promise. “At the heart of this work is a strong, cross-functional, and collaborative team dedicated to guiding students every step of the way.”
With its proven track record, PSP continues to serve as a model for community colleges nationwide, demonstrating the profound impact of comprehensive student support programs.
