Both the Skyline and College of San Mateo women’s basketball team both posted impressive, opening-night Coast North Conference women’s basketball triumphs in their Friday openers.
Skyline upset 12th-ranked City College of San Francisco, 55-53, on the road. The game was tied at 38 entering the fourth period, where the foes traded the lead. No. 30 Skyline (12-5 overall) got a layup by Niesha Ramirez followed by an Imaya Anderson basket and free throw with two minutes left to take the lead for good. Ramirez led Skyline with 13 points, followed by Desiree Perez with 12 and Anderson with eight.
San Mateo (1-0, 6-11) romped past visiting Foothill, 56-26, tripling the tally on the visitors for most of the game. It was 19-5 at halftime and 44-15 after three quarters. Ttatian Wilson led the Lady Bulldogs with 11 points. Diamond Altamirano and Sophia Lopez had 13 rebounds apiece. Bre Hodge tallied nine points. Ravyn Martin contributed eight points, five rebounds, and three steals.
Foothill (0-1, 2-15) visits Skyline and CSM goes to Chabot (0-0, 2-15) Wednesday. Both games tip at 5 p.m.
CSM men win, lose in OT
Just two points separate the College of San Mateo men’s basketball team from first place in the extremely tough Coast North Conference after a pair of overtime road openers last week.
San Mateo defeated Ohlone College, 72-69, in last Wednesday’s overtime opener in Fremont. But the Bulldogs could not make it two successful trips over the San Mateo Bridge as Chabot (2-0, 13-3) took a 77-75 OT triumph Friday.
CSM put three players in double figures at Ohlone, led by Ben Liang with 22 points. Eliajah Newsome led four Bulldogs in doubles numbers at Chabot with 21 and totaled 30 in the two games. Keshawn Johnson had 17 points, nine rebounds, and three steals against Chabot. Wilson Tran had 11 points, nine rebounds, and three assists in that game and totaled 29 points for the week.
Against Chabot, CSM could not offset a triple double by Chabot’s Zion Yeargin: 28 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists. CSM led 34-27 at halftime but the Gladiators were able to comeback for an end of regulation tie at 64.
Skyline had a more difficult time with both foes, losing to Chabot, 84-64, and to Ohlone (1-1, 9-7), 79-69 Friday, both in San Bruno.
The Bulldogs (1-1 Coast North, 13-3 overall) Trojans (0-2, 8-8) meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at College Heights Gymnasium.
Cañada College drew the top two Coast North Conference teams for openers, falling to Las Positas (2-0, 15-1), 91-63, and to top ranked/defending state champion City College of San Francisco (2-0, 15-1), 70-57. The Colts (0-2, 6-10) visit De Anza (0-2, 6-10) Wednesday at 6 p.m.
CSM is San Francisco is No.1, Las Positas No. 9, and Chabot No. 26.
