WalletHub ranks CSM No. 15 nationally and No. 3 in California in its 2026 Best & Worst Community Colleges study.

College of San Mateo has been recognized as one of the nation’s leading community colleges, ranking No. 15 nationally and No. 3 in California in WalletHub’s 2026 Best & Worst Community Colleges study.
WalletHub evaluated 613 community colleges across the country, placing CSM within roughly the top 2.5% of the institutions included in the study. Only Saddleback College, ranked No. 6 nationally, and Santa Rosa Junior College, ranked No. 12, placed higher among California colleges.
The latest recognition marks the second consecutive year that CSM has ranked among WalletHub’s top 15 community colleges nationwide.
How WalletHub Developed the Rankings
WalletHub compared colleges using 18 measures organized into three categories: cost and financing, education outcomes, and career outcomes.
The measures examine factors such as in-state tuition and fees, grant and scholarship aid, student retention and graduation rates, student-faculty ratios, credentials awarded, student loan default rates, and median salaries after college. Because the overall ranking combines all three areas, it is intended to provide a broader view of a college’s affordability, educational quality, and student outcomes rather than relying on a single measure.
The analysis draws on data from the National Center for Education Statistics, the Campaign for Free College Tuition, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Council for Community and Economic Research. WalletHub reported that the data used for the 2026 rankings were collected as of July 14, 2026.
At CSM, the emphasis on affordability and opportunity includes the San Mateo County Community College District’s permanent Free College initiative, which eliminates tuition and registration fees for qualifying San Mateo County residents. CSM also offers more than 140 degree and certificate programs, university transfer pathways, career education, flexible course formats, and comprehensive academic and student support.
The WalletHub recognition adds to CSM’s continued record of being ranked among the country’s leading community colleges for educational quality, access, and value.
