There are some changes behind pacesetters No. 1 City College of San Francisco and No. 2 Riverside CC in this week’s coaches poll of California Community College Athletic Association football teams, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. College of San Mateo, College of the Canyons, and Golden West each moved up one spot behind the pacesetters.

It’s safe to say the College of San Mateo Bulldogs travel well. In Saturday’s first road game of the year, the Bulldogs mauled College of the Sequoias in 45-21 victory at Mineral King Bowl. CSM (2-0) has now outscored two opponents by a cumulative 90-49 to start the year with two straight wins.

The College of San Mateo Bulldogs recovered three fumbles, including two highlight-reel forced fumbles, to take control of Saturday’s community college football opener at College Heights Stadium. After a runaway fourth quarter, the Bulldogs (1-0) claimed a 45-28 victory over visiting Sierra College-Rocklin. But only after CSM came out on the short end of a 13-10 halftime score did the ’Dogs’ defense seize the day.

There’s an expectation of greatness at CSM, and for good reason. Until the Bulldogs lost last season’s Nov. 13 regular season finale to City College of San Francisco, they had won 24 straight games in Bay 6 Conference play dating back to 2016, along with four straight Bay 6 titles from 2016-19.

Ngalu — who entered the transfer portal in May — landed at College of San Mateo, where he is on the football roster as a transfer sophomore. The 6-1, 275-pound nose tackle is expected to get regular reps when the Bulldogs open the season at home Saturday against Sierra College. Kickoff at College Heights Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Of the 24 inductees into the CSM Hall of Fame class of 2022, five of them played for Owens — footballers Ryan Boschetti, Paul Bradford, Dave Hanson and Ray Hisatake — while Christie McCoy played for him with the softball team. Current softball head coach Nicole Borg, who headed the 2015 softball team, was also a player during Owens’ coaching tenure on the diamond.

A San Mateo native who has played his entire organized football career in his hometown, Bottari made the whirlwind decision to transfer to the University of Utah last Friday. As a transfer junior from College of San Mateo, the quarterback will join a Utah team as a preferred walk-on.

College of San Mateo linebacker Demarii Blanks was voted Bay 6 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. The 6-0, 230-pound sophomore out of Carlmont High School had 42 tackles and three sacks for the Bulldogs. He also forced a pair of fumbles, had two pass break-ups and an interception, as the Bulldogs completed a terrific 10-2 campaign.
