There are some changes behind pacesetters No. 1 City College of San Francisco and No. 2 Riverside CC in this week’s coaches poll of California Community College Athletic Association football teams, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau. College of San Mateo, College of the Canyons, and Golden West each moved up one spot behind the pacesetters.

College of San Mateo is hosting the Coast Conference track and field championships this week, with the trials Wednesday and the finals Saturday. The Bulldogs have posted several league-leading performances in recent weeks.

College of San Mateo had a school record-smashing day at the Mt. SAC Relays Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, site of the 2022 California Community College state meet.

College of San Mateo’s Liam Laughlin didn’t shy away from some of the top collegiate throwers in the nation over the weekend at the Stanford Invitational at Angell field and CSM used the elite competition to improve its 4 x 400 meter relay track rankings. Softball outscored three foes by a 24-1 margin last week to extend its current winning streak to 17 games, and Beach volleyball swept a pair of Coast Conference foes last week.

The members of the College of San Mateo women’s volleyball team are Bulldogs — as in the school’s mascot. But they also showed they have some “dawg” in them — an attitude that says, “Don’t mess with me.”

espite settling for second place in the Coast Conference North, the Lady Bulldogs have a good chance of hosting next Tuesday’s California Community College Athletic Association volleyball postseason opener. CSM has not hosted a playoff match since the team was re-established in 2016. Playoff seedings will be announced Thursday.

Cabrillo College came to the College Heights gym Friday night boasting an incredible 121 match Coast Conference win streak, having won 13 consecutive league titles (dating to 2007) and going unbeaten in league play since 2009. Cabrillo went 142-1 during those 13 Coast title runs — until Friday!

With a roster featuring one sophomore and a dozen freshmen, the College of San Mateo women’s volleyball team is a work in progress. If the Bulldogs can get to where head coach Katie Goldhahn believes they go, it will be a successful season for CSM.

The 100th season of sports at College of San Mateo gets officially underway Friday morning (Aug. 27) when the cross country team opens its season at the Crystal Springs Early Bird Invitational.

Through last season, CSM and West Valley had played in the same Coast Conference North. Because of a realignment prior to this year, West Valley moved to the Coast Conference South, meaning the Vikings and the Bulldogs have yet to play each other in 2019. That will change Tuesday night when CSM travels to Saratoga for a 7 p.m. start. “Everyone is excited,” CSM head coach Katie Goldhahn said. “West Valley has been on our side of the conference for the last three years (2016-18) … so I think our girls are super excited to see them.”
