Right on the cusp of the California Community College volleyball rankings, College of San Mateo is in danger of falling out of the top 25 for the first time this season. Friday night’s four-set loss at Cabrillo (6-0 Coast North, 14-5 overall) is a tough one indeed but was expected to be. Cabrillo entered the night in first place in the Coast Conference North, one game ahead of the second-place Lady Bulldogs (4-2, 13-7). Riding a three-match winning streak entering Friday’s showdown, CSM continued rolling by taking the first set off Cabrillo. But after an equalizer in Game 2, the Bulldogs let a late Game 3 lead slip away en route to a 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-15 loss.

Ranked No. 19 in the state in the first women’s volleyball poll of the season, College of San Mateo (6-2) brings a 3-game winning streak home on Wednesday (Sept. 11) against No. 22 Sierra College (4-2) at 2 p.m. That’s part of a doubleheader that begins at noon – with No. 29 Foothill (2-3) playing Sierra.

Katie Goldhahn is heading into her “senior” season as head coach of the College of San Mateo volleyball team. Yes, this will be CSM’s fourth season since Goldhahn reestablished the volleyball program in 2016. As a cornerstone of the Encore Volleyball Club in Redwood City, she has built a network of local players, and that network has paid dividends in the overall roster number — 17 players — the Lady Bulldogs will carry heading into 2019.

In only its third season, the CSM Women’s Volleyball team posted a 20-9 overall record and qualified for the CCCAA post-season.

Like most first-year head coaches, College of San Mateo women’s volleyball coach Katie Goldhahn had visions of grandeur when the school started the program in 2016. Three years later, the expectations remain the same, but the execution has been leaps and bounds better than that inaugural season.

The Bulldogs opened the season last week with a 3-2 win over De Anza, before sweeping Taft in three straight. They dropped their first match of the season, 3-1, to Santa Rosa, but bounced back with a 3-0 sweep of Alameda.

Currently tied for second place in the Coast Conference North, the Lady Bulldogs host first-place Cabrillo Wednesday. Ranked No. 5 among California Community College teams, Cabrillo is the reigning state champion and is off to a 4-0 start in conference play this year.

The bubble had to burst eventually for the College of San Mateo women’s volleyball team. After winning its first six matches of the season, CSM dropped two straight Saturday at the San Joaquin Delta Classic.

The College of San Mateo volleyball team didn’t quite know what to expect entering into its inaugural season with Wednesday’s opener at the Fourth Annual Skyline Volleyball Classic. With two wins in two matches, it’s safe to say expectations are now riding high.

The new CSM Women’s Volleyball team opens its inaugural season with two games at Skyline College in the Fourth Annual Skyline Volleyball Classic. The Lady Bulldogs open against Cosumnes River College-Sacramento at 4:30 pm, then take on Solano Community College-Fairfield at 6:30 pm.
