Shuai was the only finalist to qualify for and win the Grand Prize. The national grand 7 prize for the qualified individual with the high total score is a $3000 scholarship to go toward the continuation of his or her education at an accredited four-year institution.

College of San Mateo career education programs have again earned numerous awards from the California Community College’s Strong Workforce Stars recognition program. CSM’s career education programs won one Gold Star, two Silver Stars, and eight Bronze Stars for success in helping students reach new heights in earning power and social mobility.

College of San Mateo has developed the Year One Promise—a program that removes the financial stress while providing important tools for having a successful first year of college. The Year One Promise combines a full scholarship, up to $750 for books, and a dedicated counselor who will work with each student to make an education plan. So far, over 800 students have completed a Year One Promise application.

It was perhaps fitting that the 400th softball victory by College of San Mateo softball coach Nicole Borg and her staff — 6-4 over host Ohlone College — also gave the state top-ranked Lady Bulldogs a game and a half lead over the rival Renegades in the Coast North Conference.

CSM’s promotional video, “Welcome to College of San Mateo,” was awarded the gold medallion for best college promotional brand video by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations, District 6. The district includes all community colleges in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii and the Pacific territories. The awards were announced in March at the district’s annual dinner in Las Vegas.

This year, CSM was proud to induct 19 women and men, who have distinguished themselves either as CSM athletes or later in their careers, into the Sports Hall of Fame at a banquet held on February 9.

Regardless of what happens in Super Bowl LII, there’s a celebration awaiting Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots. The longtime slot receiver will be inducted into the College of San Mateo Hall of Fame on Feb. 9. Edelman is scheduled to attend the event as part of an 18-member class that also includes Giants broadcaster Jon Miller.

CSM’s student-produced Honors Project newsletter, Labyrinth, has again won a top prize at the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) conference. Labyrinth took second place publications for four-year universities and community colleges across the country.
