More than 100 CSM students had the opportunity to hear the former Prime Minister of Australia speak on campus. The Honorable Kevin Rudd, who served as Prime Minister of Australia from 2007-2010 and again in 2013, spoke in the CSM Theatre on September 13 about U.S.-China relations.

On May 25, 2018, over 250 CSM graduates and their loved ones crowded CSM’s gymnasium for the best-attended commencement ceremonies in recent history. This milestone in their lives will pay off professionally, personally and financially for them as they are being prepared for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow.

The year culminated on May 25 with CSM’s 96th annual Commencement, when graduates, friends and families gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate years of hard work and academic achievement. Graduates heard from keynote speaker Boryana Straubel, a CSM grad who now heads a charitable foundation.

Boryana Straubel Graduated from CSM in 2008 with an associate’s degree in liberal studies with President’s Honors and transferred to University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a BA in economics in 2010. She says, “My time at CSM was transformational and life-changing.”

CSM’s 4th Annual Earth Day Job Fair was a rollicking success. The college hosted the event on April 18th made up of 20+ exhibitors, including green jobs and internships, sustainable food and tech, environmental justice and student clubs.

On Wednesday, March 14, students, faculty, staff, and administrators from CSM joined people across the country in coming together to show solidarity with the victims of the Parkland high school massacre and to make a statement against gun violence.

Educators, juvenile justice professionals and community organizations gathered on January 26 in Sacramento to at the Creating Pathways from Youth Incarceration to Higher Education Conference.

This year, CSM was proud to induct 19 women and men, who have distinguished themselves either as CSM athletes or later in their careers, into the Sports Hall of Fame at a banquet held on February 9.

Rep. Speier held a town hall meeting at CSM on February 3 to address the Peninsula community’s concerns with changes in the tax code going into effect next year. In attendance were IRS spokesman Paul Axelson, state Sen. Jerry Hill, Assemblyman Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, and tax attorney and CPA Russ Stanaland.

Regardless of what happens in Super Bowl LII, there’s a celebration awaiting Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots. The longtime slot receiver will be inducted into the College of San Mateo Hall of Fame on Feb. 9. Edelman is scheduled to attend the event as part of an 18-member class that also includes Giants broadcaster Jon Miller.
