Don’t let Jackie Prager’s size fool you. She may be an introvert — and small — but Prager pushes herself. For instance, she has two black belts in kung fu — a fact that makes her parents feel a lot better about Prager attending college on her own.

After searching the web, the 2011 Aragon High School and San Mateo Middle College graduate, Megan Ryan, came across Bike & Build — a nonprofit that organizes cross-country cycling trips to benefit affordable housing in the United States.

This weekend, local youth have an opportunity to learn about a variety of topics during the San Mateo County Youth Conference. Hosted by the San Mateo County Youth Commission with the help of other San Mateo County groups, the free Saturday event at the College of San Mateo offers panel discussions with leaders, presentations with movies, how-to lessons and the opportunity to meet with a variety of local organizations.

The competition was open to all high school students in the Bay Area. Bay Area viewers will have the opportunity to watch the student productions, as part of the Youth Cinema public television series to air on KCSM this fall.

San Mateo and Hillsdale high school students have teamed up with their teachers and professors at College of San Mateo to develop a tool to identify star types, a star’s radius and its distance from the Earth by analyzing the energy a star emits.

Twelve incoming freshmen proudly displayed the certificates they earned as participants in CSM’s inaugural Summer Bridge Program. Summer Bridge is designed to help students make a successful transition from high school to college life through a holistic approach that combines academic, social and personal aspects.

Sydnie McGuire has a unique goal in life; it’s really what she doesn’t want out of life: To become a hobo. She laughed, “If I try my hardest, I’ll get it done,” she said relating to any challenges that come her way.

High School filmmakers will be honored at KCSM’s 4th Annual Spotlight! High School Filmmaking Competition Awards Night to be held on May 2 in CSM’s Theatre.
