CSM’s Career and Workforce Hub helps to guide students into programs that lead to jobs. One way to do that is to provide students with marketing materials that capture the excitement and growth potential in career programs.

For the second time in three consecutive years, CSM’s Honors Project publication, Labyrinth, has won first place in a national honors newsletter competition. The National Collegiate Honors Council awarded Labyrinth first place among all public and private universities and colleges in the nation. The awards were announced at NCHC’s annual national conference in Boston in November 2018.

On Wednesday and Friday nights at the College of San Mateo, it’s not uncommon to see students gathered in a classroom and focused on building a wide range of skills, from sharpening their math to understanding team dynamics.

College students are challenged every day by the cost of living in the Bay Area. Many struggle with bills, debt and food insecurity. In order to support their educational goals, College of San Mateo has partnered with United Way Bay Area to bring a SparkPoint Center to its campus.

CSM has added an exciting new adjunct faculty member to its extensive roster of working artists. Pantea Karimi is a well-established artist who works in installation art, prints, virtual reality and video projection.

CSM students are now able to pick up an affordable meal for just $5 in the Bulldog Bookstore. “Grab & Go” meals include a sandwich, fresh fruit and a bottled water. Students must show a current CSM student ID to purchase the discounted meals, which are subsidized by ASCSM.

The CSM Fire Technology department is honoring the late fire instructor Don Ciucci by naming its new fire engine in his memory. The Fire Academy dedicated the Don Ciucci Training Engine on August 13, 2018. Chief Ciucci’s nephew Chris Wettstein, who also teaches in the CSM Fire Technology program, presented the new engine in his honor.

Beginning in June 2018, Bay Area Pathways Academy launched yet another successful six-week summer program at the College of San Mateo, serving more than 400 students in grades 6 through 9 from both near and far, including from San Mateo County, a cohort of middle school students from Japan, and a cohort of scholarship-support students from East Palo Alto.

This year, 522 tax returns were prepared and 502 were e-filed during 7 class meetings by 25 students. The students were assisted by 25 experienced volunteers who answered questions and reviewed every return that was completed. CSM has e-filed the most returns of any VITA site in San Mateo County for the past two years.

Students in CSM’s Digital Media department have created a brand new digital radio station. The new station, KDOG (a play off CSM’s Bulldog mascot), is streaming online, 24/7, at collegeofsanmateo.edu/kdog.
