College of San Mateo routed winless De Anza College 61-14 on Saturday afternoon in Cupertino, but it lost the first quarter.

Sammy Fanua rushed for four touchdowns and College of San Mateo ran for eight scores overall as the Bulldogs (2-0 in Bay 6 Conference, 6-1 overall) routed winless Dons 61-14 Saturday at De Anza.

College of San Mateo freshman Miles Willis made the first two catches of his collegiate career count on Saturday, as the slot receiver grabbed two touchdowns in the No. 4-ranked Bulldogs’ 24-21 win over No. 3 Santa Rosa at CSM’s College Heights Stadium.

The College of San Mateo football has a bye this week. That gives the Bulldogs plenty of time to digest their first loss of the season.

It was a tough loss to swallow in that it caused CSM to fall from No. 1 to No. 4 in the California Community College Athletic Association rankings this week. For Pollack though, who doesn’t put much stock in rankings, it was the way the Bulldogs lost which made for, as he described it, the long ride home.

American River College had plenty of tricks up its sleeve. In the end though, it was a good, old-fashioned prolific quarterback which did in College of San Mateo’s undefeated record.

Through those four games, the Bulldogs have outscored their opponents 185-42 and are fifth in the state in points per game at 46.2.
