As part of its ongoing engagement with community leadership, CSM hosted the 2019 San Mateo Leadership Program for its education day on December 7, 2018.

More than 200 campus and community members gathered at CSM on November 14 to formally launch the new SparkPoint Center. President Mike Claire and San Mateo Mayor Rick Bonilla greeted the crowd, followed by comments from CSM Health Services Director Emily Barrick and United Way Bay Area President Anne Wilson.

CSM students and the San Mateo community celebrated Día de los Muertos on November 1 in the College Center plaza. Full of bright costumes, energetic dancing, arts activities, music and food, the festival continued a long tradition at CSM.

More than 170 CSM faculty and staff took part in a day of presentations, panels and professional development workshops designed to engage the campus community for Flex Day on October 10, twice as many as attended last year.

More than 100 CSM students had the opportunity to hear the former Prime Minister of Australia speak on campus. The Honorable Kevin Rudd, who served as Prime Minister of Australia from 2007-2010 and again in 2013, spoke in the CSM Theatre on September 13 about U.S.-China relations.

On May 25, 2018, over 250 CSM graduates and their loved ones crowded CSM’s gymnasium for the best-attended commencement ceremonies in recent history. This milestone in their lives will pay off professionally, personally and financially for them as they are being prepared for the jobs of today and the careers of tomorrow.

The year culminated on May 25 with CSM’s 96th annual Commencement, when graduates, friends and families gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate years of hard work and academic achievement. Graduates heard from keynote speaker Boryana Straubel, a CSM grad who now heads a charitable foundation.

Boryana Straubel Graduated from CSM in 2008 with an associate’s degree in liberal studies with President’s Honors and transferred to University of California, Berkeley, graduating with a BA in economics in 2010. She says, “My time at CSM was transformational and life-changing.”

CSM’s 4th Annual Earth Day Job Fair was a rollicking success. The college hosted the event on April 18th made up of 20+ exhibitors, including green jobs and internships, sustainable food and tech, environmental justice and student clubs.

On Wednesday, March 14, students, faculty, staff, and administrators from CSM joined people across the country in coming together to show solidarity with the victims of the Parkland high school massacre and to make a statement against gun violence.
