College of San Mateo concluded the spring semester with its 102nd Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 24. The iconic College Heights Stadium was abuzz with excitement as it welcomed hundreds of graduates from CSM’s Class of 2024. A total of 1,520 degrees and certificates were awarded, symbolizing the hard work and dedication of the graduating class. The stands were filled with the cheers of friends and family members, creating a vibrant atmosphere as the graduates entered the stadium and took their seats on the field.

Dr. Richard Storti, CSM Acting President, delivered greetings and introductions, followed by a welcome from John Pimentel, President of the SMCCCD Board of Trustees. Alex Guiriba, Interim Vice President of Student Services, then took the stage to recognize the contributions of recent retirees. Also in attendance on the President’s Platform were Melissa Moreno J.D., SMCCCD Chancellor, and Aaron McVean, SMCCCD Vice Chancellor of Educational Services & Planning. 

Enzo Ferreira, President of the Associated Students of CSM, shared details about the graduating class, highlighting their diverse backgrounds and achievements. This year’s student speaker, Thuc Nguyen, captivated the audience with her inspiring journey as a Vietnamese immigrant and first-generation college student. She spoke about overcoming poverty and homelessness, her passion for inclusive education, and her dedication to the visual and performing arts.

Claudia Sandoval, a celebrity chef and entrepreneur who won the sixth season of MasterChef U.S. with Gordon Ramsay, delivered the keynote address. Chef Claudia shared her experiences from her culinary career, emphasizing themes of perseverance, creativity, and the importance of community support.

Dr. Carla Grandy, CSM Vice President of Instruction, then presented academic honors, followed by Todd Windisch, President of the Academic Senate, who formally presented the Class of 2024. Graduates proudly crossed the stage as their names were called to receive their degrees and certificates.

The celebration continued after the ceremony, with attendees gathering in the Bayview Dining Room for a lively reception. The reception was a fitting end to the day, as it provided an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the hard work, achievements, and success of CSM’s Class of 2024.
