Grotz and the Bulldogs overcame a slow start Tuesday to take down the Lobos 8-1. After surrendering a run two batters into the game, No. 22 settled down and pitched seven innings, scattering another five hits while walking two and striking out five.

The College of San Mateo baseball team finally reached the .500 mark overall and moved its conference record to 6-4 with a 6-1 win yesterday over West Valley.

The college baseball season opened officially Friday and several local players will be among those who contribute to the six NCAA Division I programs in the Bay Area. College of San Mateo sent players to three of those schools.

The Bulldogs fell 3-2 to Sierra College in the 2013 season opener. It was a game where CSM loaded the bases three difference times — twice with less than two outs — and only cashed in once, and only one run to boot.

With newly-adopted changes to the CCCAA rules, it’s been a long time since the Bulldogs have seen another team because a handful of scrimmages are now illegal. So after way too many intrasquad games, manager Doug Williams summed up the feeling in two very simple words: “Let’s play.”

The Bulldogs will open their season Friday at home against Sierra College at 2 pm. They begin the year ranked first in Northern California.

The Chicago Cubs and former Texas Rangers pitcher Scott Feldman have agreed to a one-year contract, the team said Tuesday. Feldman, a former Burlingame High and College of San Mateo standout, is guaranteed $6 million next season.

The Marlins on Friday afternoon announced the hiring of Rob Leary as bench coach and Chuck Hernandez as pitching coach. Leary and Hernandez are the final two coaches to join Redmond, who was hired on Nov. 1 to replace Ozzie Guillen.

On September 14, College of San Mateo will honor nine decades of its athletic legacy when it inducts 16 new members into the Athletics Hall of Fame. The distinguished list of 2012 inductees represents a wide range of success and eras over the past ninety years.
