San Mateo, CA; April 24, 2009—College of San Mateo administrators announced today that the second year of the College’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) was “an outstanding success” as more than 250 community members received free tax preparation service.

Instructor Gordon Lunn trained and supervised 30 CSM student volunteers who prepared more than two times the returns processed at the site in 2008. The VITA center on the CSM campus was coordinated by Donna Marcus.

“These volunteers received valuable hands-on work experience that will prepare them for a new career, while at the same time helping the community,” said Bruce Maule, CSM accounting professor and one of the key organizers of the program.

CSM is the only community college in the area, and possibly one of the few in the country, with its own VITA training and VITA site, he added.
