ABILENE – ACU head softball coach Chantiel Wilson announced two more additions to her 2010 team on Thursday as junior college transfers Missy Mendoza and Ashley Peterson announced they would transfer to ACU.

Mendoza transfers to ACU from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., while Peterson is transferring to ACU from San Mateo (Calif.) College.

Mendoza will be a junior outfielder for the Wildcats in 2010 and last year she hit .392 with 38 runs scored, 62 hits, eight doubles, seven triples, six home runs and 45 RBI in 55 games. She played centerfield for the Mounties, committing just one error and compiling a .982 fielding percentage. She was a first team all-South Coast Conference selection and the MVP of the 2009 California Junior College State Tournament.

Mendoza led the Mounties to the California state championship by hitting three game-winning home runs and driving in nine runs in the tournament.

“Missy is an exciting player to watch,” Wilson said. “She is an excellent outfielder with a great arm and range. Offensively Missy rarely gets cheated. She is a smart hitter who likes to hit with runners in scoring position. Missy will be a great fit for our program.”

Peterson, who will be a junior for the Wildcats in 2010, was a utility player at San Mateo where she hit .489 with 39 runs scored, 68 hits, 17 doubles, eight triples, four home runs and 38 RBI in 44 games. She was a first team all-state and first team all-North Coast Division selection. As a freshman in 2008 she hit .410 with 57 hits, 13 doubles, three triples and 27 RBI in 43 games to earn first team all-division honors.

“Ashley proved the past two years to be one of the premier hitters in the California junior college system,” Wilson said. “She will give next year’s lineup quite a boost with her ability to drive in runs hitting for both power and average.”
