SAN FRANCISCO — While City College of San Francisco’s offense roared up and down the field like a finely tuned stock car, the College of San Mateo football team’s repeatedly sputtered and stalled.

As a result, there was no catching the Rams in their 33-0 rout of the visiting Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.

“We just didn’t block. We didn’t execute well. We didn’t run hard and do the things that we were supposed to do,” CSM coach Bret Pollack said.

How badly did the Bulldogs — California’s No. 8-ranked community college football team — struggle against No. 2 CCSF? Let us count the ways:

  • CSM (6-2, 1-2 NorCal Conference) generated just 67 yards of total offense and three first downs in the first half. Two of those first downs came on the Bulldogs’ first possession; the other came virtue of a CCSF penalty. The Bulldogs had just seven first downs in the entire contest and churned out just 132 yards of total offense — more than 300 fewer than the unbeaten Rams (8-0, 3-0).
  • CSM never had a drive that lasted longer than eight plays (not counting penalties). Its longest drive in terms of yardage came in the third quarter, when freshman quarterback Miles Freeman completed two passes totaling 40 yards to sophomore wide receiver Rashaan Vaughn to help bring the Bulldogs from their own 20 to the CCSF 39.That was the furthest CSM penetrated into Rams territory.
  • CSM’s leading rusher, sophomore slotback Therman McGowan, had just 43 yards on nine carries. Freeman was credited with five fumbles, only one of which he lost, and had minus-4 rushing yards on 15 carries.
  • The Bulldogs’ passing game wasn’t much better. Freeman completed just 4 of 11 passes for a paltry 51 yards and threw two interceptions — both to Rams defensive back Allen Chapman, who returned the second one 20 yards for the game’s final score in the fourth quarter.Despite CCSF’s eye-popping yardage total — the Rams had 438 total yards thanks in large part to sophomore quarterback Steele Jantz’s 25-for-38, 382-yard passing day — defense wasn’t much of a problem for CSM. Led by freshman lineman Langi Haupeakui, who forced a fumble and sacked Jantz once for an 11-yard loss, the Bulldogs’ defense did not yield a touchdown in the second half and held CCSF to a field goal or less on four occasions when it moved inside the CSM 25.”Our defense played well the whole game,” Pollack said. “Other than a couple of errors early on, which we fixed, our defense played really well as a group.”

Those errors included a 62-yard pass from Jantz to sophomore receiver Aaron Horne that resulted in CCSF’s first touchdown and a shovel pass from Jantz to sophomore running back Kenny Haynes in the second quarter that went 36 yards for another score.

In between, Jantz scored a TD of his own on a 1-yard sneak.

Horne finished with six catches for 170 yards for the Rams, while Haynes had 160 yards of total offense — 73 rushing, 87 receiving.

Freshman kicker Edgar Castaneda connected for two CCSF field goals in the second half, a 26-yarder and a 31-yarder.

Pollack said he hopes his team respond’s to this week’s loss better than it did to last week’s loss to then-No. 8 Foothill.

“You never expect a letdown like this,” the CSM coach said. “We just got beat by a better team today. That’s just the way it is.”
