Daniel Nava, Boston Red Sox

Can dreams come true twice? That question must be haunting Daniel Nava, the Red Sox feel-good rookie of 2010. His grand slam on his first pitch in the major leagues was Disney come to life: At 27, the unheralded Nava had finally worked his way up from being equipment manager on his college team to starting outfielder in the American League East.

On Sunday, he was sent back down again, after a disappointing spring-training performance. Last year’s run of 188 plate appearances in the big leagues provided a lifetime of memories, but Nava wants a longer career. He wants to be a real player.

Cinderella didn’t have to hope for a second miracle, and neither does Nava. His performance last year was no mirage. He can do it again. The real Daniel Nava story should not be about dreams coming true, but about how people with true desire and character keep on working, making their own fortunes. We expect to see him at Fenway Park, later this summer.
