Carlmont-Belmont right-hander Devin Bradley and Serra-San Mateo outfielder Justin Maffei highlight a class of 10 recruited baseball transfers from College of San Mateo who found new homes at four-year institutions.

“We look to try and prepare them in three ways — from a baseball standpoint, from an academic standpoint and from a life standpoint,” CSM coach Doug Williams said. “And it’s encouraging to see the progress that these players have made.”

Maffei, who earned a scholaship to University of San Francisco, hit .324 in the spring and led the Bulldogs with three home runs and 33 runs scored. He was also second with 25 RBIs and 19 steals.

Bradley, who is off to Coastal Carolina University, went 5-2 from the mound with a 1.57 ERA over 63.0 innings as he held hitters to a .208 average.

Five others also received scholarships, with closer Josh Fredendall bound for the Pac-12 and University of Washington after leading the state with a 0.25 ERA. Fredenhall allowed one run on 14 hits in 36 innings prior to the playoffs.

Serra-San Mateo graduate Doug Caldwell (University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan.) and fellow right-hander Zach Sanford (Sonoma State) join outfielder Nate Bobrowski (St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas) and shorstop Riley Goulding (University of Texas Pan American) at the next level.

A pair of utility players in Joe Goldenberg (Hawaii) and Griffin Kirsch (Nevada-Reno) will be recruited walk-ons, just like catcher Shawn Walters (Sonoma State).

Another pair of CSM transfers are deep into training camp as they acclimate to the Pac-12, with wide receiver Rahsaan Vaughn (Washington-Fremont) making the most of his 4.37 speed and 6-foot-2 frame to impress coaches at Oregon, the runner-up to Auburn in the national championship game last season.

There was some confusion as to whether or not Vaughn was fully enrolled at Oregon, but he showed up to practice roughly 10 days ago, according to an ESPN Insider report. And within the past week, several sources have Vaughn on the cusp of securing a starting spot on the spread offense.

Offensive lineman Jeremy Galten (San Mateo) — all 6-4, 285 pounds of him — is listed third on the depth chart for a tackle spot with USC.

  • The Los Angeles Times reported that less than a week into football practice several USC veterans tabbed tailback Amir Carlisle (The King’s Academy-Sunnyvale) as the early front-runner for top freshman in training camp. The 5-10, 180-pound Carlisle was the 2010 Daily News offensive prep player of the year and is listed fourth on the depth chart, according to Rivals.com.
  • Jerry Rice Jr. (Menlo School-Atherton) is listed fourth on the UCLA depth chart at one of the wide receiver spots, according to Rivals.com. The 5-10, 182-pound redshirt sophomore didn’t make a catch his freshman year. He is joined on the Bruins’ roster by freshman walk-on QB Christoph Bono (Palo Alto).
