Farmhouse Culture SauerkrautIf you purchased sauerkraut at the San Mateo Farmers’ Market recently, you may very well be eating award-winning sauerkraut.

Farmhouse Culture, a Santa Cruz-based business that sells at the San Mateo Farmers’ Market, was awarded a 2012 Good Food Award earlier this month for their customer-favorite Smoked Jalapeño Sauerkraut.

“Thousands of folks regularly eat the Smoked Jalapeño Kraut on their eggs in their morning or their grilled quesadilla at night. And now this – to have the good fortune on Friday the 13th to be considered for a Good Food Award,” Farmhouse Culture founder Kathryn Lukas wrote in her blog.

More than 1,000 products were entered into the second annual competition recognizing artisan food producers across eight categories and five regions.

The awards take “a comprehensive view, honoring people who make food that is delicious, respectful of the environment, and connected to communities and cultural traditions.”

Farmhouse Culture’s smoked jalapeño and other innovative, California-inspired krauts can be found at the San Mateo Farmers’ Market at the College of San Mateo every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The market is open year-round, rain or shine, and typically features more than 80 farmers and food producers.
