The Coast Conference is split into two baseball divisions, with no overall champion. It’s more a matter of bragging rights, which now belong to Pacific Division leader Ohlone College from Fremont after its 9-4 victory at College of San Mateo on Wednesday afternoon.

“Taking a loss is never good, but sometimes it’s something that we need to learn from,” CSM coach Doug Williams said.

The loss snapped a 12-game win streak for the Bulldogs (22-9, 14-3 Coast), who came in ranked No. 2 in Northern California and enjoyed a three-game cushion in the Golden Gate Division after a 5-1 win against Chabot on Saturday.

“We didn’t play with the same enthusiasm as we did on Saturday,” Williams said.

No. 6 Ohlone (21-9, 15-3) led 5-0 after two innings and chased out CSM starter Clay Bauer after 4 1/3 innings in which he gave up five hits, four walks and six runs (four earned).

The Bulldogs managed 15 hits (with right-fielder Mark Hurley going 4 for 5 with two doubles) but stranded 12 baserunners.

“We left way too many people on base and way too many people in scoring position,” Williams said. “We’ve been getting the timely hits and today it didn’t happen.”

CSM designated hitter Cody Zimmerman went 3 for 5 with two RBI and Jarrett Costa also had three hits.
