After grinding out a series win in the regional playoffs, the College of San Mateo baseball team is now only three wins away from claiming its second super-regional title in the past three years.

“I was most impressed with the club after the debacle Sunday morning, the team was able to get back and get hungry for that second game,” CSM coach Doug Williams said about his team’s 14-3 Game 2 loss to Cabrillo. “When you lose the second game of a three-game series, it’s easy to lose that momentum. Our guys really worked to get that momentum back and that feeling into that last game.”

CSM (29-10) opens the four-team super-regional against cross-Bay foe Diablo Valley (24-15) and with the stellar pitching the Bulldogs have had, their confidence could not be higher.

“When you know you have a guy on the mound that is only going to give up at the most one or two runs, it takes the pressure off the hitting,” CSM outfielder Bo Walter said. “That’s how it’s been all year.”

The Bulldogs have seen DVC once this season.

Despite allowing his first home run of the season Sunday, Clint Terry has been dominant as he carries a state-best 0.78 ERA into the weekend.

The other super-regional opener pits Ohlone College and Consumnes River College.

CSM has seen rival Ohlone twice in the regular season and five times in the fall. If the Bulldogs draw Consumnes, it would be the first time the two squads meet.

n The CSM softball team (38-4) swept its playoff-opening series over American River and now will host one of the two four-team super-regionals this weekend.

CSM opens with seventh-seeded Sequoias (30-9) on Friday and could end up facing its league rival Ohlone (29-11),
which took the final game of the regular season from the Bulldogs.

The winner of the baseball and softball super-regionals will meet in the state championships at Bakersfield College beginning May 18.
