Mark Hurley’s six-hit day wasn’t enough as the College of San Mateo baseball team fell short of the state final four, bowing to visiting Cosumnes River 13-3 on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (32-12), who made the final four last year, forced the Sacramento college into a winner-take-all final game in the Super Regional by winning Sunday’s first game 7-6 on Paul Hernandez’s bunt single in the 11th inning.

Hurley was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the second game after he and Hernandez each had three this in Game 1.

Cosumnes River (25-16) scored five times in the second and six more times in sixth of Game 2 and won the Super Regional title despite being outhit 11-9 by CSM, which made two errors to none for the visitors.

Cody Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for the Bulldogs.

Luke McCreesh started for CSM but was chased after one inning, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks with one strikeout. Andrew Herrera, the second of six pitchers used by CSM, worked the next four innings and was tagged with the loss. he gave up four earned runs on five hits, walking one without a strikeout.

Earlier in the day at Bulldog Field, Hernandez’s bunt single in the bottom of the 11th scored Cameron Gniadek to give CSM a 7-6 win.

Gniadek, who entered the game as a pinch runner, began the rally with a one-out single to left. An error on the shortstop moved Gniadek to second, then he stole third.

Hurley and Hernandez each drove in a pair of runs. Hernandez scored twice. One of Hurley’s hits was a triple.

Clay Bauer pitched the first 8 2/3 innings for CSM. He gave up six runs, all unearned, on five hits and five walks. He struck out six before Parker Swindell pitched the final 2 1/3 and got the win. He allowed just one hit, striking out three and walking two.

CSM made four errors to three for Cosumnes River, a Sacramento school that carries a 34-11 record into the state semifinals.
