Goulding earned his first win as CSM’s new head baseball coach Friday, in the California Community College Athletic Association season opener, a 5-1 win at home against Cabrillo College. Goulding officially took over as field manager this season from longtime skipper Doug Williams, who remains on staff as associate head coach.

Cardinale was the hero at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored in his Bulldogs debut.

After Cabrillo struck first with a Matt Lawton solo home run in the top of the second, CSM rallied back to tie it in the bottom of the frame. Cardinale set the table with a one-out single. Then, after stealing second, he scored on a Vicente Feliciano triple. Feliciano scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. In the third, Cardinale added an RBI single to plate AJ Carter. He drove home another insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth, and scored on a Feliciano RBI double.

On the mound, Danny Peters and Chris Walsh combined on a three-hitter. Peters (Palo Alto) earned the win, working five innings while allowing one run on two hits and walk, while striking out six. Walsh (Burlingame) worked four shutout innings to earn the regulation save.

Cardinale (Palma) is a transfer freshman who spent the 2023 season at University of Utah.

CSM (1-1) closed out opening weekend Saturday with a 5-2 loss at College of Marin. Cardinale was 1 for 3 in the game. Charlie Welch (Larkspur) drove in both the Bulldogs’ runs.
