The beginning of February featured milestones of 700, 600, and 500 for College of San Mateo athletics

Softball coach Nicole Quigley-Borg started the month reaching 600 wins with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Sacramento City College. Following another pair of victories over College of the Siskiyous on Saturday, she now has a record of 602-145 in 18 seasons at the CSM helm.

A pair of CSM basketball players reached the points plateaus during Saturday’s Coast North Conference women’s basketball game with visiting City College of San Francisco.

Jayonnah Carter reached the 700-point career mark, tallying 12 points against CCSF, while Joslyn Moore surpassed 500 points, scoring 18 against the Rams.

Carter, a 5-7 guard out of San Leandro High School, now has 710 points in two seasons with CSM. Moore, a 5-10 front line star from Carlmont now has 513 points.

Skyline women basketball stay atop conference standings; CSM drills Las Positas

The Skyline women’s basketball team remained tied for the Coast Conference North women’s lead with San Francisco after opening the second half of play with a solid 98-80 win over Las Positas Feb. 2. Marley Langi led Skyline (5-1 Coast North, 12-12 overall) with 22 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Jenika Zurita added 18 points.

CSM finished the first half of Coast North play with a 3-2 record, running past visiting Las Positas, 96-61, Jan. 31. Ariel Petalver led CSM with 23 points and eight rebounds. Carter had 19 points and Moore added 13.

CSM, ranked No. 24 in the state,  had trouble in Saturday’s second round opener with No. 13 CCSF, falling behind 22-8 after the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs closed to 33-23 at halftime but could not close the deficit and lost, 65-47. Moore led CSM with 18 points, while Carter scored 12.

San Mateo (3-3, 16-7) next hosts No. 21 Chabot (3-2, 15-8) on Friday at 5 p.m.

CSM men upset Las Positas

 The CSM men’s basketball team upset No. 24-ranked Las Positas-Livermore, 63-60, Jan. 31 in the Coast Conference North first half finale at College Heights Gymnasium.

CSM’s Jason Montgomery scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead CSM back from a 43-32 halftime deficit. Jack Busenhart had 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Jermaine Patton also scored 12 points.

Defending champion San Francisco started the second half of league play with an 86-54 win at CSM on Friday night. Las Positas defeated Skyline, 80-76.

CSM (3-4, 10-13) will host conference co-leader Chabot College (6-1, 18-5) at 7 p.m. Friday.

Cañada opened the second half of league with a 76-72 overtime upset of Chabot, giving the Gladiators their only league setback to date.

 Skyline (3-4, 16-7) entertains Cañada at 7 p.m. Friday.
